The “First Lybenić Massacre” was a brutal event carried out by Serbian military and police forces against the civilian population of the village of Lybenić, near Peja, Kosovo. This massacre, one of three committed in the village, occurred on May 25, 1998. Serbian military-police forces launched a punitive expedition against Lybenić, which was first shelled from the Zagerma military base. Following the shelling, special units of the Serbian police entered the village, where they looted homes, burned part of the village, and executed 9 civilians, wounding 3 others. This atrocity is part of a larger pattern of violence during the Kosovo conflict, where Serbian forces targeted civilian populations in Kosovo.
