The National Historical Museum, the largest museum institution in Albania, was inaugurated in Tirana. A working group consisting of the best specialists in museology, archeology, history, ethnography, visual art and restoration worked on the conception and contents of the National Historical Museum. The working group was led by prominent personalities, such as Aleks Buda, Stefanaq Pollo, Selami Pulaha, Skënder Anamali, Emin Riza, Burhan Çiraku, Kleanthi Dedi, Iljaz Goga, Rrok Zojzi, Abaz Dojaka, Ramadan Sokoli, Enver Faja, Nina Shehu, Vilson Kilica, Fatmir Haxhiu, Myrteza Fushekati, Met Deliu, Aleksandër Meksi and many others. Each of the showrooms has a distinct architecture, thus avoiding monotony and repetition. Each hall conveys the message and atmosphere of the period to which it belongs. The building of the National Historical Museum occupies a total area of 27,000 m 2 ; it has an exhibition area of 18,000 m 2 and a total volume of 81,000 m 3 . In the premises of the museum there are about 6200 objects, which belong to a relatively long period of time, starting from the 4th millennium BC and up to the second half of the 20th century. On the main facade of the National Historical Museum is a mosaic measuring 37 x 11 m and 10 m high. It occupies an area of 400 m 2 . The mosaic is titled “Albania“. The pavilions, which operated until 1992, were: Antiquity, Middle Ages, National Renaissance, Independence, Anti-Fascist National Liberation War and Socialism. In 1996, the “Communist Persecution” pavilion was established, while in 1999, the Icons pavilion was set up. Within the framework of the 60th anniversary of the Liberation of the Motherland, in 2004, the pavilion of the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War was rebuilt. Currently, the National History Museum has seven pavilions: Antiquity, Middle Ages, Iconography, National Renaissance, Independence, Anti-Fascist National Liberation War and “Communist Persecution“.
