The Association of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo was founded as the precursor to the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo. At the end of 1976, ASHAK was admitted to the Council of Academies of Sciences and Arts of the former Yugoslavia. With the Law on the Establishment of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo, passed by the Assembly of Kosovo on April 18, 1978, this association was transformed into the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo. Its founding period until 1992 was marked by efforts to consolidate its scientific and artistic activities within the framework of Yugoslavia. Initially, it had three sections: social sciences, natural sciences, and language, literature, and arts. During this period, its scientific and artistic activities began, including the publication of the first periodic editions and special publications by its members. The Association of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo is the highest institution of science and art in Kosovo, headquartered in Pristina. It operates independently in the fields of science and art. Its activities are of special public and national interest, aiming to promote and encourage research and artistic work in Kosovo, ensure the implementation of scientific achievements, cultivate artistic values in the country, and develop international scientific and artistic cooperation. The Academy consists of distinguished workers in science and art in the country, including regular members, corresponding members, foreign members, and honorary members. It has three main governing bodies: the Assembly, the Presidency, and the President. The Assembly, composed of all its regular and corresponding members, is the highest decision-making body, which approves the statute, various regulations, and other normative acts, as well as the work plan, financial plan, elects regular members, corresponding members, foreign and honorary members, elects the Presidency, establishes sections, study groups, scientific units, and study centers. According to the Association’s statute, its duties include carrying out scientific and artistic projects, publishing the results of scientific research, publishing works of science and arts of particular importance for the development of science and arts in Kosovo, publishing its own publications and reports, organizing scientific meetings, symposiums, conferences, scientific sessions, scientific panels, exhibitions, concerts, consultations, and others; participating in determining the goals of the development of science and arts in Kosovo; expressing opinions and proposals on the development of science and art, etc. The Association of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo collaborates with similar institutions in other countries.
