Xhemail Mustafa, a writer, publicist, and political activist, was born in Gllamnik, Podujevë. He completed his primary and secondary education in his hometown and in Podujevë, then pursued studies in Albanian language and literature at the Faculty of Philology in Prishtina. At the same time, he also studied journalism. In 1978, he began working for the newspaper Rilindja, initially as a journalist for the culture section and later as its editor. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he became involved in the political developments of the time, becoming one of the founders of the Lidhja Demokratike e Kosovës (Democratic League of Kosovo – LDK). He later served for many years as a member of the Presidency of the Democratic League of Kosovo and its spokesperson. In 1998, he published the work with critical insights “Mrekullia e shkrimit” (The Miracle of Writing) and two years later published his second book “Një lutje për Prishtinën” (A Prayer for Prishtina, 2000). In this work, he described the days and nights of terror in Prishtina during NATO’s bombing campaign and the state of terror imposed by Serbian forces on the citizens of Kosovo. The work is structured as a diary for “78 nights of fear, courage, and hope,” corresponding to the duration of NATO’s operation against Serbian targets in Kosovo and Serbia. Xhemail Mustafa was killed in an assassination near his home in Prishtina in 2000. A primary school in Prishtina was named after him in 2004, while the Ibrahim Rugova Foundation published his complete works in two volumes in 2012. (In the photo: Xhemail Mustafa)
