The 1st Congress of Arbëresh for the language was convened, the assembly of Arbëresh people of Italy at the end of the 19th century to serve the coordination of the work of the patriots for the problems of the Albanian language and efforts for the Independence of Albania. Congress I met in Corigliano Calabro, on the initiative of Jeronim de Rada. Representatives from most of the Arberian districts of Calabria took part. At the congress, it was decided to form an “Albanian National Society”, based in Saint-Mitre (Italian: San Demetrio Corone), which would publish an Arbëre newspaper and be connected with Albania. Jeronim de Rada was elected chairman of the company. In January 1897, the first number of its organ “La nazione albanese” was published in Pallagorio of Catanzaro.
