The “Battle of Gëziq” took place, the main battle for breaking the German counterattacks during the offensive of the II Assault Division for the liberation of Central and Northern Albania. A regiment of the 181st Division, of about 3,000 people, reinforced with artillery and armored vehicles, took part from the German forces. From October 21–25, 1944, the Germans attacked several times in order to break through the defenses of Gëziq, so they could recapture Shpal of Mirdita. Partisan forces during the night of October 25–26 counterattacked on a front of 2–3 km. The Germans retreated leaving many dead, wounded and 50 prisoners. 100 gendarmes were also captured, as well as a large amount of war materials and equipment. From the partisan forces, 12 partisans were martyred and 35 others were injured. The victory in the battle of Gëziq marked the liberation of all of Mirdita. (In the photo: View from Mirdita.)
