Gustav Meyer, Austrian albanologist, one of the founders of albanology, was born in Gros Strehlitz, Germany . He published a number of studies and works on modern Greek, Turkish, and especially on the Albanian language. In the field of Albanian studies, he dealt more with etymology, phonetics and historical grammar. In 1891 he published the work “Etymologisches Ëörterbuch der albanesischen Sprache” (“Etymological dictionary of the Albanian language”). He also published 6 volumes of Albanian studies (Albanesische Studien, I–IV, Vienna, 1883–1897). In addition to these, Gustav Meyer also published ” Kurzgefasste albanesische Grammatik” , Lajpcig, 1888 (“Summary Grammar of Albanian”). He defended the thesis of the origin of Albanian from Illyrian and scientifically defined its position as a language that occupies its own place in the group of Indo-European languages.
