In Rome, Eleuterio Francesco Fortino, priest of Arbers, labeled by the Italian press as “the giant of ecumenism”, passed away. He was born in Saint Benedict (Italian: San Benedetto Ullano) in Calabria, in 1938. During his life in Rome and the Vatican, from 1965, where he worked on various tasks, he was the protagonist of the ecumenical dialogue and the role of deputy secretary of the Pontifical Council for The Union of Christians. Deep connoisseur of theology, spirituality and culture, exceptional communicator, cordial and hospitable, cultivator and bridge-builder of relationships between people. Eleuterio Fortino made a contribution as a very important protagonist for the ecumenical dialogue of the churches, for the entire community of Arbëresh people in Italy, as well as for the Albanian people in general. He founded in Rome the cultural circle of the Arbëresh of Italy “Besa“, making the Church of St. Athanasius, where he served, a point of reference for all the Arbëresh Christian believers of Rome. During his activity, he published many theological, cultural, national and social writings. On the Albanian national cultural side, he was a link between the Arbëresh world and the Albanian world. A whole life in the service of the union of Christians and all Albanians. (In the photo: Eleuterio Francesco Fortino)
