Abdyl Hamit I (Abdülhamid I), Ottoman sultan from 1774 to 1789, was born in Istanbul (Turkey), which also included Albania occupied after the death of Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu. Abdyl Hamit I was a pious and benevolent man, with great interest in state affairs. He favored the reform and appointed capable grand viziers to whom he entrusted extensive powers. He began army reforms and opened the Imperial Naval Engineering School. He also sought to strengthen the central government against provincial rulers, particularly in Syria, Egypt and Iraq.
