Giovanni Battista Pellegrini, Italian linguist, Albanianologist, was born. He graduated in literature at the University of Padua (1945) and completed a specialization in glottology (1946). From 1964, professor at the glottology department in Padua, where he also taught the Albanian Language and Literature course; since 1991, external professor. The fields of his studies cover a wide space, ranging from toponomastics to Italian and Arabic onomastics, from the analysis of venetian inscriptions to the study of today’s dialects of the Veneto Region, from research in Roman, Germanic and Slavic Linguistics to language research of ancient Italy; in studies on Albanian, Hungarian, etc., in which problems of phonetics, historical linguistics, and lexicology are addressed. In the Albanian studies, he became known, among others, with the work “Avviamento alla linguistica albanese”, Palermo, 1995 (“Introduction to Albanian linguistics”).
