Jakup Mato

Jakup Mato, a critic, esthete, and researcher of literature and the arts, passed away in Tirana. Born in the village of Fterrë in Saranda in 1934, he completed his higher studies in Albanian language and literature at the University of Tirana in 1959. Mato worked as a literature specialist, serving as editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Mësuesi” (“The Teacher”) and later as the director of arts in the Ministry of Education and Culture in 1970. He directed the Higher Institute of Arts from 1987 to 1992 and subsequently became a scientific worker and director of the Study Center of Arts at the Academy of Sciences. His notable publications include “Risi letërsisë shqipe” (“Innovation of Albanian Literature”) (1983), “Paradokset e satirës dhe humorit” (“Paradoxes of Satire and Humor”) (2000), and “Poetika e dramaturgjisë dhe mendimit estetik” (“Poetics of Dramaturgy and Aesthetic Thought”) (2005), along with numerous critical and scientific articles exploring literature and the interaction of the arts. In his studies, Mato addressed various aesthetic issues and theories related to literature and the arts, closely examining contemporary developments and historical perspectives within Albanian arts.
