Gjin Bu<\/span>e<\/span> Shpata<\/span>, a ruler in the lands of Epirus, passed away. In the second half of the 14th century, he was proclaimed despot of <\/span>Akelout<\/span> and <\/span>Angelokastron<\/span>, and after the death of Peter <\/span>Ljoshi<\/span> (1374), ruler of the Albanian <\/span>despotate<\/span> of Arta. The boundaries of his dominions extended over a compact territory stretching from the Gulf of Ambracia to the <\/span>Gli<\/span> River in <\/span>Ch<\/span>am<\/span>e<\/span>ria<\/span>, <\/span>where the possessions of Gjin <\/span>Zenevisi<\/span> began. Throug<\/span>ho<\/span>ut his rule, Gjin Bu<\/span>e<\/span> Shpata<\/span> was openly in conflict with the rulers of Ioannina, Toma <\/span>Preljubovi\u0107<\/span>, and Esau <\/span>Buondelmonte<\/span>, w<\/span>ho<\/span> managed to withstand his pressure on Ioannina only by seeking help from the Ottomans from Thessaly. Another opponent he <\/span>encountered<\/span> was the Kingdom of Naples, which <\/span>sought<\/span> to extend its own dominion over the Ionian coast and the lands of the <\/span>Despotate<\/span> of Arta. In 1379, Gjin Bu<\/span>e<\/span> Shpata<\/span> achieved a victory in front of the walls of Arta by defeating an expedition from Naples led by the commander of the <\/span>Johanite<\/span> of R<\/span>ho<\/span>des, w<\/span>ho<\/span> was captured. The conflict continued with further battles with the Toko brothers, vassals of Naples on the islands of <\/span>Lefkada<\/span> and Cephalonia, against w<\/span>ho<\/span>m Gjin Bu<\/span>e<\/span> Shpata<\/span> successfully used his fleet. A third front opened for Gjin Bu<\/span>e<\/span> Shpata<\/span> with the invasion of the Ottomans in 1384 and 1388 from Thessaly and Macedonia, w<\/span>ho<\/span>m he managed to defeat at the <\/span>Drisk<\/span> site in 1396. Alt<\/span>ho<\/span>ugh engaged in conflicts on multiple fronts, the <\/span>Despotate<\/span> of Arta under the rule of Gjin Bu<\/span>e<\/span> Shpata<\/span> was able to withstand for some time the disruptive effect of external forces and achieve its greatest strengthening.<\/span><\/span> (In the <\/span>p<\/span>ho<\/span>to<\/span>: Despotate <\/span>of<\/span> Arta <\/span>under<\/span> the rule <\/span>of<\/span> Gjin Bua Shpata)<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
