The <\/span>Italo-Greek<\/span> War<\/span> (1940–1941) broke <\/span>out<\/span>, <\/span>when<\/span> Fascist<\/span> Italy<\/span> attacked<\/span> Greece<\/span> from<\/span> the <\/span>territory<\/span> of<\/span> occupied<\/span> Albania<\/span>. The <\/span>murder<\/span> in Konispol, <\/span>on<\/span> June<\/span> 15, 1940, <\/span>of<\/span> the <\/span>Albanian<\/span> Daut<\/span> Ho<\/span>xha, <\/span>from<\/span> the <\/span>village<\/span> of<\/span> Dhro<\/span>ho<\/span>mi<\/span> of<\/span> Chameria<\/span>, <\/span>which<\/span> was<\/span> carried<\/span> out<\/span> by a <\/span>squad<\/span> coming<\/span> from<\/span> Greece<\/span>, <\/span>served<\/span> as a <\/span>pretext<\/span> for<\/span> the <\/span>outbreak<\/span> of<\/span> war<\/span>. <\/span>After<\/span> some<\/span> first<\/span> successes<\/span>, the Italian <\/span>army<\/span> was<\/span> broken<\/span> and<\/span> forced<\/span> to <\/span>withdraw<\/span> from<\/span> the <\/span>occupied<\/span> Greek<\/span> lands<\/span>. <\/span>During<\/span> the <\/span>months<\/span> of<\/span> December<\/span> 1940 – <\/span>April<\/span> 1941, the <\/span>war<\/span> took<\/span> place<\/span> on<\/span> Albanian<\/span> soil<\/span>. <\/span>On<\/span> April<\/span> 4, 1941, <\/span>Hitler’s<\/span> Germany<\/span> attacked<\/span> Greece<\/span> from<\/span> Bulgarian<\/span> territory<\/span> and<\/span> the <\/span>Greek<\/span> army<\/span> capitulated<\/span>. <\/span>Greece<\/span> was<\/span> occupied<\/span> by the Italian <\/span>and<\/span> German<\/span> armies<\/span>. The <\/span>Albanian<\/span> people<\/span>, <\/span>alt<\/span>ho<\/span>ugh<\/span> occupied<\/span> by <\/span>fascist<\/span> Italy<\/span>, <\/span>sabotaged<\/span> the <\/span>fascist<\/span> aggression<\/span> against<\/span> Greece<\/span> and<\/span> tried<\/span> to <\/span>help<\/span> the <\/span>Greek<\/span> people<\/span> in <\/span>their<\/span> liberation<\/span> struggle<\/span>. The <\/span>Albanian<\/span> soldiers<\/span> w<\/span>ho<\/span> were<\/span> forcibly<\/span> sent<\/span> to the <\/span>Greek<\/span> front <\/span>refused<\/span> to <\/span>fight<\/span> and<\/span> deserted<\/span> <\/span>en<\/span> masse<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>Sabotages<\/span> against<\/span> the <\/span>fascist<\/span> military<\/span> machine<\/span> were<\/span> also<\/span> carried<\/span> out<\/span> behind<\/span> the <\/span>scenes<\/span>. But the <\/span>Greek<\/span> government<\/span>, <\/span>under<\/span> the <\/span>pretext<\/span> that<\/span> Fascist<\/span> Italy<\/span> attacked<\/span> Greece<\/span> from<\/span> Albanian<\/span> lands<\/span>, <\/span>unjustly<\/span> calling<\/span> occupied<\/span> Albania<\/span> a participant in <\/span>this<\/span> war<\/span>, <\/span>declared<\/span> Albania<\/span> an <\/span>enemy<\/span> state<\/span> in <\/span>November<\/span> 1940 <\/span>and<\/span> decreed<\/span> a “<\/span>state<\/span> of<\/span> war<\/span>” <\/span>against<\/span> it. <\/span>This<\/span> absurd <\/span>decree<\/span> remained<\/span> in force <\/span>even<\/span> after<\/span> the end <\/span>of<\/span> World<\/span> War<\/span> II. <\/span><\/span>(<\/span>Pictured<\/span>: Italian <\/span>attack<\/span> 1940.)<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
