The credit for the opening of this museum goes to the French archaeologist Léon Rey, who became not only the instigator, but also its main “supplier” thanks to the persistent work done by the mission he led in Apolloni during the years 1924-1938. On October 8, on the birthday of King Zog, it became possible to open the first archaeological museum, precisely in the historical house where the first government of Ismail Qemali was located after the Declaration of Independence in Skelë. After listening to the national anthem, Léon Rey took the floor, who emphasized: “It is deeply comforting to see your country affirming respect for the past and saving the treasures of its artistic heritage. You have realized that the forces of nationalism, these spiritual forces that will perhaps save the world from barbarism, come to us in part from our ancestors with whom we seek to relate and love. This museum is a worthy museum, because its roof covers what is most beautiful in this world: the love for art…”. The opening of the “Zog I Archaeological and Historical Museum” had a wide media coverage mainly in Albania, but also in France. From the position of a professional, Rey had insisted that the museum of archaeological findings from Apolloni be opened in Vlora, despite the fact that King Zog himself recommended the transfer of the museum to Tirana. In fact, Vlora was the closest city to Apolloni where tourists could visit, within the day, both the site and the museum, as well as offering the conditions for the opening of the archaeological museum. (In the photo: The building where the Zogu I Archaeological and Historical Museum was opened.)

Text: Marin Haxhimihali, Apolonia, the beginning of the first archaeological site museum in Albania , Museological Studies, No, 4, Tirana, 2014, pages 87-91.

Photo: © National Museum of Independence, Vlora.

Graphic processing: AHCF

The Zogu I Historical and Archaeological Museum was opened, the first museum in Albania created entirely with objects discovered at a single archaeological site, and which simultaneously had the parameters of a public museum.

[17

post-8090","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ngjarje
["GET
