The People’s Assembly of the Republic of Albania approved the special law, which juridically freed Albania from any obligation arising from the Warsaw Treaty. The Warsaw Pact was a political-military alliance between the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, the German Democratic Republic, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, <\/span>Romania,<\/span> and Albania, signed in Warsaw (Poland) on May 14, 1955, with a term of 20 years. The provisions of the Warsaw Pact provided for mutual consultation between the participating states on important international problems, for joint action for military <\/span>assistance<\/span> in the event of<\/span> an armed attack or a threat to one or several members of the treaty. It envisaged the existence of joint armed forces, predetermined for actions, under a unified command, with a unique doctrine and with a certain degree of organization and cooperation. The armed forces of the Warsaw Pact numbered <\/span>4,800,000 men<\/span>, about 65,000 tanks, about 11,000 fighter planes and about 1,000 large warships.
