Migj<\/span>eni<\/span> (<\/span>Millosh<\/span> Gjergj Nikolla), a poet and prose writer, died in a sanatorium near Turin, Italy. He was born in <\/span>Shk<\/span>odër in 1911, where he received his early education be<\/span>f<\/span>ore completing his studies at the city school in Tivar. <\/span>F<\/span>rom 1929 to 1933, he attend<\/span>ed the Theological Seminary o<\/span>f<\/span> Ma<\/span>nastir<\/span>. A<\/span>f<\/span>ter returning to his homeland, he worked as a pri<\/span>ma<\/span>ry school teacher in <\/span>V<\/span>ra<\/span>kë<\/span> (<\/span>Shk<\/span>odër) and Pukë. During this time, he struggled with a lung disease that had developed while he was in the seminary. In late 1937, h<\/span>e went to Italy <\/span>f<\/span>or treatment and to pursue higher studies in <\/span>li<\/span>te<\/span>ra<\/span>ture, but he was hospita<\/span>li<\/span>zed in a sanatorium near Turin, where he passed away in 1938. <\/span>Migj<\/span>eni<\/span> began pub<\/span>li<\/span>shing his <\/span>f<\/span>irst poems and sketches in <\/span>ma<\/span>gazines such as “<\/span>Illyrija<\/span>” and “Bota e re<\/span>” (“New World”). His complete works were pub<\/span>li<\/span>shed by Skënder <\/span>Lua<\/span>ra<\/span>si<\/span> in 1957, under the auspices o<\/span>f<\/span> the League o<\/span>f<\/span> Writers and Artists. Subsequently, his writings were pub<\/span>li<\/span>shed multiple times in Ti<\/span>ra<\/span>na and Prishtina. <\/span>Migj<\/span>eni’s<\/span> poetry introduced new themes<\/span> to Albanian <\/span>li<\/span>te<\/span>ra<\/span>ture, high<\/span>li<\/span>ghting the <\/span>li<\/span>ves o<\/span>f<\/span> the impoverished segments o<\/span>f<\/span> society, themes o<\/span>f<\/span> misery and its mo<\/span>ra<\/span>l consequences, and the artistic experience that called <\/span>f<\/span>or change and a vision o<\/span>f<\/span> a better, more peace<\/span>f<\/span>ul, and just world. He exemp<\/span>li<\/span>f<\/span>ied<\/span> a hu<\/span>ma<\/span>nism that rejected <\/span>myths, cults, and all <\/span>f<\/span>orms o<\/span>f<\/span> ir<\/span>ra<\/span>tional and sentimental attitudes. Though his nar<\/span>ra<\/span>tive prose was not pub<\/span>li<\/span>shed during his <\/span>li<\/span>f<\/span>e<\/span>time, it captured the <\/span>li<\/span>te<\/span>ra<\/span>ry movement’s desire to move away <\/span>f<\/span>rom ro<\/span>ma<\/span>ntic-sentimental visions and o<\/span>utdated idols. <\/span>Ma<\/span>teria<\/span>li<\/span>st in his be<\/span>li<\/span>e<\/span>f<\/span>s, <\/span>Migj<\/span>eni<\/span> recognized that an individual’s psyche was shaped by their economic circumstances, and he <\/span>sought<\/span> to depict this dependence on the harsh rea<\/span>li<\/span>ties o<\/span>f<\/span> complex social relations. His work was a pro<\/span>f<\/span>ound expres<\/span>sion o<\/span>f<\/span> the pain<\/span>f<\/span>ul concerns o<\/span>f<\/span> Albanian spiritual <\/span>li<\/span>f<\/span>e<\/span>, urging the i<\/span>ma<\/span>gination o<\/span>f<\/span> a hu<\/span>ma<\/span>n society where the individual could <\/span>f<\/span>ully rea<\/span>li<\/span>ze themselves amid e<\/span>xi<\/span>stential comple<\/span>xi<\/span>ties. <\/span>Migj<\/span>eni<\/span> re<\/span>ma<\/span>ins<\/span> one o<\/span>f<\/span> the most read writers in Albanian <\/span>li<\/span>te<\/span>ra<\/span>ture, with <\/span>his creativity playing a signi<\/span>f<\/span>icant re<\/span>f<\/span>or<\/span>ma<\/span>tive and innovative role, re<\/span>f<\/span>lecting the modern developments o<\/span>f<\/span> European <\/span>li<\/span>te<\/span>ra<\/span>ture, which is one reason his work has been t<\/span>ra<\/span>nslated into seve<\/span>ra<\/span>l languages. <\/span><\/span>(In the photo: Milosh Gjergj Nikola<\/em>)<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
