Mother <\/span>Tere<\/span>sa (Gonxhe Bojaxhiu), an hono<\/span>ra<\/span>ry sister o<\/span>f<\/span> the Catho<\/span>li<\/span>c Church and a renowned hu<\/span>ma<\/span>nist, was born in Sk<\/span>opje to the Bojaxhiu <\/span>f<\/span>amily <\/span>f<\/span>rom <\/span>Prizren<\/span>. She was baptized in the Cathed<\/span>ra<\/span>l o<\/span>f<\/span> the Heart o<\/span>f<\/span> Christ in Skopje and <\/span>ma<\/span>de the decision to become an hono<\/span>ra<\/span>ry sister in 1928 in <\/span>Letnica<\/span> o<\/span>f<\/span> Vitia<\/span>, where she developed a deep admi<\/span>ra<\/span>tion and devotion to the Saint o<\/span>f<\/span> Our Lady. She en<\/span>tere<\/span>d the Institute o<\/span>f<\/span> Our Lady o<\/span>f<\/span> the River, also known as the “Sisters o<\/span>f<\/span> Loreto,” in Ireland, where she took the name Sister <\/span>Ma<\/span>ry Theresa in honor o<\/span>f<\/span> Saint Theresa o<\/span>f<\/span> the Christ Child. In December o<\/span>f<\/span> that year, she moved to India, speci<\/span>f<\/span>ically Calcutta, and in <\/span>Ma<\/span>y 1931, she was assigned to the Loreto community in <\/span>Enta<\/span>li<\/span>, where she t<\/span>aug<\/span>ht at “St. <\/span>Ma<\/span>ry” girls’ school. She served as a history and geog<\/span>ra<\/span>phy pro<\/span>f<\/span>e<\/span>ssor and later as <\/span>headmistress<\/span>, but she was continually d<\/span>ra<\/span>wn to work with the po<\/span>or, sick, and abandoned. In 1950, the Vatican approved <\/span>the estab<\/span>li<\/span>shment o<\/span>f<\/span> the “Missionaries o<\/span>f<\/span> Love,” through which Mother <\/span>Tere<\/span>sa devoted hersel<\/span>f<\/span> to charity, hu<\/span>ma<\/span>nity, and peace, spreading her mission worldwide. <\/span>F<\/span>ollowing <\/span>Calcutta<\/span>, she opened houses in R<\/span>ome, Tanzania, and later estab<\/span>li<\/span>shed missions on all continents, including <\/span>nearly all<\/span> communist countries during the 1980s and 1990s, such as the <\/span>f<\/span>ormer Soviet Union, Albania, and Cuba. Mother <\/span>Tere<\/span>sa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, and upon rece<\/span>iving it, she <\/span>stated<\/span>, “In terms o<\/span>f<\/span> blood and ancestry, I am Albanian. I am Indian by nationa<\/span>li<\/span>ty. According to the vocation, I am a regular Catho<\/span>li<\/span>c and belong to the <\/span>whole world<\/span>. My heart belongs to the heart o<\/span>f<\/span> Jesus.” In 1990, she was declared an hono<\/span>ra<\/span>ry member o<\/span>f<\/span> the Academy o<\/span>f<\/span> Arts and Sciences o<\/span>f<\/span> Kosovo, and she visited the region <\/span>f<\/span>ive times between the 1970s and 1990s. In 1993, she t<\/span>ra<\/span>veled to Albania with Pope John Paul II, and in 1997, she received the “Gold Medal o<\/span>f<\/span> the American Congress” and was<\/span> named an “Hono<\/span>ra<\/span>ry Citizen” o<\/span>f<\/span> America. As an iconic <\/span>f<\/span>igure o<\/span>f<\/span> the century, she earned the title “Holy Mother,” inspiring countless missionaries globally. The “Missionaries o<\/span>f<\/span> Love” now <\/span>ope<\/span>ra<\/span>te<\/span> dozens o<\/span>f<\/span> houses with thousands o<\/span>f<\/span> hono<\/span>ra<\/span>ry sisters. Mother <\/span>T<\/span>ere<\/span>sa passed away at the age o<\/span>f<\/span> 87 and was buried in Calcutta, India. Due to her widespread <\/span>f<\/span>ame, Pope John Paul II later allowed the canonization process to begin. In an ext<\/span>ra<\/span>ordinary event on October 19, 2003, in the Vatican, he proclaimed her Blessed, a<\/span>nd on September 4, 2016, coinciding with the 19th anniversary o<\/span>f<\/span> her death, Pope <\/span>F<\/span>ra<\/span>nc<\/span>is declared her a saint. <\/span><\/span>(In the photo: Saint <\/em><\/span>Tere<\/span><\/em>sa<\/em>)<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
