Ismet Jashari<\/span>, a fighter of the Kosovo <\/span>Li<\/span>be<\/span>ra<\/span>tion Army and com<\/span>ma<\/span>nder known as “Ku<\/span>ma<\/span>nova,” was <\/span>ma<\/span>rtyred in <\/span>Luzhnica<\/span>, Kosovo. Born in the village of <\/span>Orizare<\/span> in Ku<\/span>ma<\/span>nova in 1967, he <\/span>began his high school education in Ku<\/span>ma<\/span>nova and completed it at a high school in <\/span>Presheva<\/span>. During this time, he joined the illegal <\/span>ra<\/span>nks of the People’s Movement for the Repub<\/span>li<\/span>c of Kosovo. In <\/span>Aug<\/span>u<\/span>st<\/span> 1988, he immig<\/span>ra<\/span>ted to Switzerland, where he continued h<\/span>is patriotic activities. In <\/span>Ma<\/span>rch 1998, Jashari joined the Kosovo <\/span>Li<\/span>be<\/span>ra<\/span>tion Army, initially stationed at the Army Headquarters in <\/span>Li<\/span>koc<\/span>, <\/span>Drenica<\/span>, before being assigned to mi<\/span>li<\/span>tary duties in the <\/span>Llapusha<\/span> area. <\/span>He became known by the nickname “Ku<\/span>ma<\/span>nova” wit<\/span>hin the <\/span>ra<\/span>nks of the Army.<\/span> In <\/span>Ma<\/span>y 1998, he <\/span>participated<\/span> in battles around the <\/span>Llapushnik<\/span> gorge, and on June 17, he launched an attack against Serbian forces <\/span>attempting<\/span> to advance toward <\/span>Luzhnica<\/span>. Jashari defended the positions of the Kosovo <\/span>Li<\/span>be<\/span>ra<\/span>tion Army<\/span> during the Serbian offensive on July <\/span>25<\/span> and 26, 1998, in the <\/span>Llapushnik<\/span> gorge and the village of <\/span>Zborc<\/span>, near <\/span>Car<\/span>ra<\/span>leva<\/span>. On <\/span>Aug<\/span>u<\/span>st<\/span> 2<\/span>3, 1998, as the Serbian army attacked <\/span>Kleçka<\/span>, where the Gene<\/span>ra<\/span>l Staff of the Kosovo <\/span>Li<\/span>be<\/span>ra<\/span>tion Army was <\/span>located<\/span>, he organize<\/span>d resistance in <\/span>Baj<\/span>ra<\/span>k<\/span> of <\/span>Luzhnica<\/span>. In the early morning of <\/span>Aug<\/span>u<\/span>st<\/span> 2<\/span>5<\/span>, he launched a counte<\/span>ra<\/span>ttack to retrieve the bodies of fallen soldiers. After seve<\/span>ra<\/span>l hours of fighting in <\/span>Luzhnica<\/span>, <\/span>Ismet Jashari<\/span> was <\/span>ma<\/span>rtyred. In his honor, the 121st <\/span>Briga<\/span>de of the <\/span>Pa<\/span>shtrik<\/span> Ope<\/span>ra<\/span>tional Zone of the Kosovo <\/span>Li<\/span>be<\/span>ra<\/span>tion Army was named “<\/span>Ismet Jashari<\/span> – Ku<\/span>ma<\/span>nova.” Additionally, a statue of him has been erected in <\/span>Prizren<\/span>, near the house of the Albanian League of <\/span>Prizren<\/span>.
