Attented the Commercial School in Vlora (1932). In the 30s of the 20th century, he was a collaborator and editor of the magazines “Illyria“, “Përpjekja shqiptare” (“Albanian effort”), etc. He participated in the first communist groups and in their activities. In 1936 he volunteered in the International Brigades in the Spanish War, and after its failure, moved to France (1939–1940). He returned to Albania (1940), where he was soon imprisoned as a known anti-fascist and exiled to the island of Ustika (Italy, 1941). As he escaped from exile (1943) in Italy, he joined a partisan unit with Croats, Serbs, Montenegrins and Italians. He worked for a while in Rome in the newspapers “Unita” and “Avanti”. As soon as he returned to his homeland (October, 1944) he joined the partisan brigades. In 1945, he was appointed editor-in-chief of the only daily newspaper “Bashkimi” (“Unity”). He was imprisoned in 1947 for political reasons and released in 1951. Passionate about communist visions for a just and equal world, he had been a member of the communist parties of Spain, France and Italy. However, Petro Marko spent a troubled life (for a while he was expelled from the League of Writers and his right to publish was taken away), because his open work was misunderstood and stigmatized from time to time by the official practices that accompanied and supervised the development of the literature of socialist realization. Petro Marko has written poems, stories, novels, dramas, journalism, memoirs, etc. His first poems had a romantic spirit. They expressed the experiences of a rebellious soul, of an idealist who seeks freedom, truth and poetry. His later poetry had strong social emphasis against tyranny, poverty and social inequality. The poems written in Spain, France and in the fascist prison were inspired by proletarian and socialist ideas. Often written in free verse, rich in figures of thought, Petro Marko’s poems played their role in the renaissance of Albanian poetry in the 1930s-1950s . The humanism of his work was part of that layer of the spiritual constitution created in post-war Europe, which sought a society without wars, without national and racial differences, a world that did not recognize social inequality, where everyone had the opportunity to fully realize themselves. His most accomplished work, the novel “Qyteti i fundit” (“The last city”)(1960), was dedicated to universal humanism and sincere love, far from any moral taboo. The prose of Petro Markos stands out for its flexible and flowing narration, especially for the multiplicity and truthfulness of the events. The characters of his prose are rather characterized by dialogue, which is often dramatic, but sometimes also pathetic. Their inner world is also revealed through the monologue with psychological details. He passed away in Tirana, in 1991. (Photo: Petro Marko)

Text: Albanian encyclopedic dictionary – Vol. 2 , Academy of Sciences of Albania, “Kristalina-KH”, Tirana, 2008, page 1631-1632.

Photo: © https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petro_Marko

Graphic processing: AHCF

[15

post-7398","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ditelindje
["GET
