The “Ilinden Uprising” broke out as a national liberation movement of the Macedonian population in the districts of Bitola and Thrace against the Ottoman yoke. It was led by the Internal Revolutionary Organization of Macedonia (VMRO), which fought for the formation of an autonomous Macedonia. In addition to the Macedonians, other nationalities in the region, including Albanians and Vlachs, actively participated in the uprising. Their representatives were involved in equal proportions in the bodies resulting from the uprising. Significant assistance was provided by Albanian patriots, who supplied the insurgents with weapons, food, and other equipment, as well as sheltering them to protect them from the pursuit of the Ottoman armies. The Ilinden Uprising also paved the way for the broader anti-Ottoman movement of Albanians in Kosovo, with Mitrovica serving as its epicenter.
