On June 27th, 1944, under the leadership of the infamous general Napoleon Zerva, the massacres against the Cam population began. Çameria constitutes the fourth group of ethnographic provinces that form Tuscany, which today in the Greek territory coincides with the prefecture of Thesprotia. In ancient times, the Thesprotes, together with the Molose and Kaone tribes, constituted the main tribes of Epirus. Çamëria lies in the southwestern part of Albania, from the Pavlla river to the bay of Preveza, which includes the districts of Filat, Gumenica, Margëlliç, Paramithi, Parga and Preveza. Chameria covers an area of 4,000 square km, with a coastline of 107-108 km. It has a population of more than 75,000, which is entirely Albanian.

The Albanian territories of Chameria were occupied by Greece during the Balkan wars and were annexed by the Conference of Ambassadors with the decision of August 11th, 1913. The Treaty of Florence established the final border line on December 17th, 1913. The Lausanne Treaty of 1923 was gave rise to the leadership circles of Athens, to forcefully expel the Chams from their lands. The massacres against the Cham population began on June 27th, 1944, under the leadership of the infamous general Napoleon Zerva. The most brutal massacre against Muslim Albanians took place in the region of Paramithi. The forces of the Hellenic Republican National League (EDES) entered the city and killed around 600 Muslim Albanians. The population of Parathimia was caught by surprise. The number of civilians killed was: in Filat 1286, in Gumenica 192, in Parga 620 and during the period from June 27th, 1944 to March 1945, 2771 civilians were killed. As a result of this genocide, about 25,000 of the Muslim population of Chameria moved and settled in Albanian cities. During their migration to Albania, about 2,400 people lost their lives on the way, due to lack of food and suffering. The Assembly of the Republic of Albania on June 30th, 1994 announced June 27th as “The Day of Genocide against Chameria Albanians by Greek chauvinism”. Many members of the Cham community, on June 27thof every year, commemorate their relatives who were massacred by the Greek state, during the years 1913-1944, in Qafë-Bôte. (In the photo: View from the Assembly of the Republic of Albania, June 30, 1994.)

Text: National History Museum

Photo: © https://memorie.al/

Graphic processing: AHCF

[17

post-7146","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-ngjarje
["GET
