{"id":7059,"date":"2023-10-16T13:10:14","date_gmt":"2023-10-16T13:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.albanianheritage.al\/2023\/10\/16\/the-assembly-of-ferizaj\/"},"modified":"2025-10-15T18:51:44","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T18:51:44","slug":"the-assembly-of-ferizaj","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.albanianheritage.al\/en\/2023\/10\/16\/the-assembly-of-ferizaj\/","title":{"rendered":"The Assembly of Ferizaj"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>14 \u2013 23 July 1908<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Assembly of Ferizaj convened as a massive anti-Ottoman demonstration of the Albanians of Kosovo, directed simultaneously against the interventions of the Great Powers in Albanian lands. The concession of the Uvac-Mitrovica railway and its commencement of construction by the Austrians, as well as the Anglo-Russian agreement of Reval (June 1908) for &#8220;reforms&#8221; in Macedonia, sparked a powerful popular movement in Kosovo to defend the country against the aspirations of Austria-Hungary and Russia to partition Albanian lands. At the first meeting of the Assembly on July 14, the attendees expressed opposition to foreign interventions, against reforms that would lead to the partition of Albanian lands, and for measures to protect the country from a possible foreign invasion. The intensive propaganda of the Young Turks against the Great Powers and the Sultan, as well as their promises to defend the rights of Albanians and the integrity of their lands through the constitution, led the Albanians gathered in Ferizaj to unite with the Committee &#8220;Unity and Progress&#8221; and support the Young Turk revolution. On July 20 and 22, 1908, the Assembly of Ferizaj, on behalf of 30,000 armed Albanians gathered there, under the leadership of Isa Boletini, Bajram Curri, Hasan Prishtina, Mustafa Lita, Idriz Seferi, etc., sent two telegrams to the Sultan one after the other, demanding the proclamation of the Constitution and the convocation of the parliament. On July 23, the Albanian insurgents, without receiving a response from Istanbul, proclaimed the Constitution in Manastir, Presheva, and other centers.
