The “Bashkimi” Club of Manastir, a patriotic-political and cultural organization, was founded by Fehim Zavalani and Gjergj Qiriazi. In its statute published in 1908, it was stated that the club would work to strengthen the national unity of Albanians, to advance their culture, to promote the Albanian language, and to spread Albanian schools throughout the country. The “Secret Committee” operating alongside it worked for the autonomy of Albania. It published its own press organ called “Bashkimi i kombit” (Unity of the Nation), later renamed “Drita” (The Light). The “Bashkimi” Club of Manastir played a major role in the establishment of other clubs and was elected at the Congress of Manastir in November 1908 and at the National Congress of Elbasan in September 1909 as the central club coordinating political-cultural activities throughout the country. It was a proponent of the call for the Congress of Manastir for the unification of the alphabet, assisted in the spread of Albanian schools, in organizing resistance against the pro-Turkish reaction and its nationalizing measures, and for the defense of the Albanian alphabet and culture. It was closed by the Ottoman authorities during the suppression of the uprising in 1910 but was revived and continued its patriotic activities.
