The Peace Treaty of San Stefano was signed, the treaty that Tsarist Russia i<\/span>m<\/span>posed on <\/span>Turkey<\/span> after the latter’s defeat in the Russian-Turkish war (April 24, 1877). It is na<\/span>m<\/span>ed after the village of San Stefano (today <\/span>Jeshilkoj<\/span>), where it was signed. With it, Russia tried to gain the greatest benefits, putting the other Powers before the acco<\/span>m<\/span>plished fact. The <\/span>central point<\/span> of this treaty was the creation of a large Bulgaria, whose borders also included i<\/span>m<\/span>portant centers and other villages with Albanian population, such as <\/span>Tetova<\/span>, <\/span>Kirçova<\/span>, <\/span>Gostivari<\/span>, Dibra, <\/span>Struga<\/span>, <\/span>Pogradec<\/span>, <\/span>Korça<\/span>, etc. The treaty severely curtailed the Albanian lands. <\/span>M<\/span>ontenegro tripled its territory and expanded in the direction of Albania, taking Ulqin, Tivar, and Buna, <\/span>al<\/span>m<\/span>ost the<\/span> entire Shkodra Lake except for the city, Hoti and Gruda, Plava, and <\/span>Gucia<\/span>. Serbia extended to the <\/span>sandjak<\/span> of Prishtina near <\/span>M<\/span>itrovica. Thus, <\/span>on the basis of<\/span> the Peace Treaty of San Stefano, <\/span>m<\/span>ost of Northern and Eastern Albania was divided between the three Slavic states. The other Great Powers strongly opposed the treaty, which led to the <\/span>m<\/span>eeting of the Congress of Berlin in June 1878. In Albania, it beca<\/span>m<\/span>e the cause of the explosion of a wide protest <\/span>m<\/span>ove<\/span>m<\/span>ent, which gave a new i<\/span>m<\/span>petus to the general national <\/span>m<\/span>ove<\/span>m<\/span>ent, which was crowned in June with the establish<\/span>m<\/span>ent of the Albanian League in <\/span>Prizren<\/span> (1878). <\/span><\/span>(In the photo: Illustrative <\/em><\/span>m<\/span>o<\/span>m<\/span>ent fro<\/span>m<\/span><\/em> the Peace Treaty of San Stefano, 1878<\/em>.)<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
