Hysni Babameto was born in Gjirokastër, a mathematics teacher and Albanian educator, one of the first pioneers of Albanian education in the 20th century.

Enver Hoxha was born in Gjirokastër, a leader of the Communist Party and later of the Party of Labor of Albania. He led the National Liberation Antifascist War and directed the Albanian state after the war.
