The newspaper “Shqipëria”

Lexo ngjarje:

In Bucharest, Romania, the newspaper “Shqipëria” was published (1897–1899), a weekly publication (biweekly from issue 36), covering social, literary, cultural topics, etc., and serving as the organ of the “Committee of Albanians” in Romania. It was published until June 18, 1899 (61 issues), in Albanian, Romanian, French, and Greek. It defended the demands of the Albanian people for autonomy and independence; raised its voice against Ottoman rule, and exposed the chauvinistic ambitions toward Albania. It addressed issues related to the Albanian language and alphabet. One of the founders and administrators of the newspaper was Visar Dodani. In order to make the Albanian cause known to the European public opinion, it occasionally published articles in foreign languages. (Illustrative photograph)
