Spiro Kosturi, patriot, son of Jovan Kosturi, one of the founders of the First Albanian School, was killed in Thessaloniki. Under the example of his father, he was actively involved in the national awakening. He was serving as one of the four custodians of the boys’ school in Korça when, in 1903, he was arrested and exiled to Thessaloniki by the Ottoman authorities, who were afraid of strengthening nationalist sentiments through education in Albanian. The murder of Kosturi affected the Albanian national movement. The diaspora press, “Kombi” (“Nation”)in Boston and “Drita” (“The light”)in Sofia, intensified efforts to keep the flame of patriotism burning.
