In Ioannina, the first issue of the newspaper “Awakening of Albania” (1909-1911), a political, social, and literary newspaper in Albanian and partly in Turkish, was published. It was published as the “national organ” of the club “Bashkimi” of Ioannina by Abdul Haki, Naum Naçi, Hamza Tatëzati, and Fehmi Tepelena. One hundred twelve issues were published but with temporary interruptions and delays. The last issue came out on May 16, 1911. The newspaper “Awakening of Albania” propagated the necessity of expanding and strengthening the national movement. It connected the activity of the compatriots and their societies throughout South Albania and beyond and laid the urgent need for knowledge and the spread of knowledge in the native language. Defended the Albanian cause against external enemies and their tools within the country. It was distributed inside and outside Albania, wherever there were exiled Albanians, even in the United States of America. (In the photo: Front page of the newspaper “Awakening of Albania”.)
